Five years after she examined the shocking plight of women under the Taliban, the valiant Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy returns to Afghanistan to see what “liberation” has meant to its female citizens. Asking if girls are back in school, if women are free from the obligation to wear the burka, if women are now visible and have meaning, Obaid-Chinoy finds grim, compelling and depressing answers. No wonder self-immolation, rates of which have doubled in the last two years, seems like a blessed escape.
